Roaming Images Workshop at Maraya Art Centre

The Roaming Images workshop is based on the theoretical concept of “Images Make Sense.” This will give a short art-historical account on the ways that western models of vision have been developed and influenced during Renaissance by culture and science in the Arab world. Such a comparison aims to create a base for discussion that will lead to a research of contemporary phenomena.

Here is an overview of lecturers at the first workshop session:

Sotirios Bahtsetzis is an art historian and independent curator. In 2005 he was awarded a PhD in Art History from the Technische Universität of Berlin (with highest honor). The subject of his dissertation, to be published by Fink publications, is the history of installation art. Since 2006 he is adjunct professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Thessaly and the Hellenic Free University in Greece. Between 2002 and 2004 he taught History of Culture and Visual Culture at London Metropolitan University, and he was research-coordinator at the Museum Of Installation, London (Installation Art in the New Millennium, Thames & Hudson, 2003). His research interests focus on the history of installation art, theory of space and image theory (visual perception, psychology, phenomenology, psychoanalysis) in relation to interdisciplinary approaches (theory of film, visual media technology, gender studies and political philosophy).

George Katodrytis is an architect involved in practice, teaching and research. He is currently Associate Professor of Architecture at the American University of Sharjah. He studied and taught at the Architectural Association in London and he has been a visiting professor at various schools around the world. He has built a number of projects in Europe and the Middle East as well as published widely on contemporary architecture, urbanism, cultural theory and digital media. The work addresses the ‘city’, especially as it is evolving in the 21st century. He has adopted digital technology and scripting as tools for establishing new formal and performative models in architecture.

Ebtisam Abdul-Aziz is a multidisciplinary artist, Curator and writer from and based in the UAE. Reflecting her Bachelor’s Degree in Science & Mathematics, AbdulAziz incorporates her unique perspective on mathematics and the structures of systems to explore issues of identity and culture through installations, performance pieces and works on paper. Her works are evidence of a fascinated with systemic ways to produce emotionally or intellectually meaningful forms of expression. Combining the scientific with the arbitrary, at times juxtaposing the two in order to force the viewer to question their assumptions about rules in the natural and formulaic world, Abdul-Aziz is methodical in her explorations. Her approach functions within the realm of the Gestalt theory and the recognition that understanding something is greater than perceiving the sum of all of its parts.

H.E. Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Nuaimi, a member of the ruling Ajman Royal Family, popularly known as ‘The Green Sheikh’ for his environmental advocacy, was the honorary guest during the ‘Earth Day @ ALHOSN’ celebration held yesterday (Monday, April 25, 2011) at ALHOSN University’s American Corner.

Organized by the ALHOSN Green Club in cooperation with the university’s American Corner and the Department of Urban Planning, the eco-awareness event was part of activities held by ALHOSN University in commemoration of World Earth Day 2011. The evening featured a screening of ‘The End of the Line,’ a major documentary film on the drastic impact of overfishing on the earth’s oceans, followed by a panel discussion on key environmental issues with emphasis on overfishing.

The panel included Sheikh Al Nuaimi; Thabit Abdessalam from the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency; Proscilla Guzman from the US Embassy; and Tini Meyer, an international contemporary artist. Dr. Adnan Husnein, Green Club Advisor and Chair of the Urban Planning Department, acted as a moderator. The event was highlighted by H.E. Sheikh Al Nuaimi’s presentation on his environmental activities and experiences, after which H.E. addressed questions from the audience.

ABOUT GREEN ABU DHABI 2010

Green Abu Dhabi 2010 is a three week art show focusing on educating the community about the environment and sustainability. The initiative is a call to action and invites the entire UAE community to ‘paint the town green.’ This can be as simple as recycling and switching off lights when they are not needed, to mobilising members of your immediate community to initiate wider pr grammes such as beach clean ups. Green Abu Dhabi 2010 aims to become an annual community event working from a grass roots level with schools up to the highest level decision maker. This year the initiative has commissioned 5 selected Emerging artists in the city of Abu Dhabi to create and sell new work focused on certain points on the environment and sustainable development. They will be the mouthpiece, they will speak to the city directly about what it means to “Paint the Town Green” to them.

Along with the main Art exhibit, Green Abu Dhabi will also reach out to the community through mini-events. This year we have 4 planned mini-events that will take place during our 3 week exhibition. The first to take place will be a Mangrove Cleanup in the city of Abu Dhabi. The second will be a Community Art Auction in Abu Dhabi. The third will be a Community Art Auction in Sharjah. And finally the last will be a Painted Tiles Mural created by as many kids in as many schools for the city of Abu Dhabi.

Additionally a percentage of all sales of artwork and merchandise sold will go to the WWF-EWS, the Future Center of Abu Dhabi, and the Sharjah Humanitarian City with whom Green Art Abu Dhabi aims to establish a new program for the city of Abu Dhabi this year with the help of proceeds from this show.

My biggest work included in the exhibition is a 14 tonne concrete sculpture sponsored by Al Fara'a Construction. The artwork is sculpture of the word Samak - fish in Arabic - and is covered with fish bones and other remnants from the beach.
Samak is a commentary on overfishing and our consumption habits. Overfishing is the number one reason why waters are running out of fish.
If we keep up the way we do, we might one day end up with fossils rather than fish. So stop being so bloody wasteful.

Creating Samak was one of the most exciting experiences for me as an artist. A huge collaboration with Al Fara'a Construction and seeing all those fish bones beautifully lit up at the inauguration.

BDP Marks Abu Dhabi Debut with Schools Competition

BDP displays shortlisted student design competition entries at Cityscape Abu Dhabi.

BDP marked the opening of its new office in Abu Dhabi with a student design competition.

BDP launched the competition called ‘Places for People”, last month, to challenge students of all ages from schools in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Kuwait to illustrate what they believe are the essential ingredients needed to create special places for people.

Students have submitted entries using a wide range of materials, including ceramics, paint, watercolour, coloured pastels, pencil and ink together with a brief written description of thoughts behind the artistic impressions.

The shortlisted entries were chosen by a panel of judges and are displayed at BDP’s ‘Places for People’ lounge area (2B20) and delegates at Cityscape are encouraged to vote for their favourite entry. The exhibition displaying the shortlisted entries was designed by BDP from card board boxes and was constructed by architectural students of AlHosn University. The competition winners will be announced on 22 April at the Aloft Hotel. Abu Dhabi.

Nadine Nackasha, head of BDP’s Abu Dhabi office comments: “BDP has worked on flagship projects across many international regions and are now delighted to be launching a Middle East and North Africa practice at Cityscape Abu Dhabi.

“Our mission is to create special places for people to live, work, shop, learn and enjoy culture. We believe in involving communities, wherever we operate, to better understand local needs, the environment, culture and future aspirations in order to design sustainable communities that meet the needs of future generations.

“So what better place to start than with the youth of today who will use and enjoy the buildings and places that we hope to create. They will be the citizens and inhabitants of the towns and cities of tomorrow that are being planned today. To do this successfully, we must understand what young people think are the essential elements that contribute to the lifestyles of the people who work, live and play in them.”

The competition judges included Dr Badraya Ahmed Al Dhahiri, Division Manager for Community Service at Abu Dhabi Municipality; John Thomas, Executive Director of Mubadala Real Estate & Hospitality; Dr Naima Benkari, Head of Architectural Engineering at Al Hosn University; local artists Wasel Saswan and Tini Meyer; Nadine Nackasha, Managing Director of BDP’s Abu Dhabi office and Gary Dicken, director, BDP.

I briefly returned to Vancouver this month to attend the memorial of Arthur Erickson. He very much encouraged and supported me as a young artist, so his passing away was sad news. Nevertheless it it was lovely to celebrate his life at Simon Fraser University, my alma matter and one of his master pieces.

It was with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to paint in his renowned Japanese garden (especially since great artists like Jack Shadbolt and Gordon Smith have painted there.) The glorious quietness, summer light and exotic were most inspiring.

As usual, I've been horrible in maintaining this blog. I'd write and then disappear off into my own little world, which is the way I tend to lead my life as an artist. Since my last entry life has changed and developed in ways I could not have imagined, which is what makes life exciting - it's a mysterious journey to destination unknown. Obviously with goals you tend to focus your efforts on accomplishing those objectives, but the path tends to vary.

My move to Abu Dhabi has been a whirlwind to say the least and I've enjoyed every bit of it. In the next few entries I'll share presentations I attended at the Emirates Palace Hotel, hosted by Tourism Development Investment Company (TDIC).

For those who are unfamiliar with what's happening in Abu Dhabi, all I can say is that it is fabulously fascinating. TDIC is the government-based developer behind Saadiyat Island, future home to the world's first Louvre outside of Paris and the biggest Guggenheim Museum. The island will also house a huge cultural and arts district, making Abu Dhabi a cultural capital of the world.

As part of this undertaking, TDIC has been organizing a series of events at Emirates Palace Hotel to share with the public the plans for Saadiyat Island. The first presentation was The Royal Academy series, where royal academicians shared their recent works with the audience. This was then followed by The Guggenheim series, where artists such as Anish Kapoor and Anselm Kiefer presented and were part of an open forum.

This is precisely what makes Abu Dhabi an intriguing place - you just never know what grandiose events can take place in the city.

I'll also make a bit more of an effort to actually maintain this blog and cover some of the art events around Abu Dhabi...

At this point I am still trying to decide if I should add red streaks to create drama... but at the same time I like the painting the way it is, it's quite relaxing and serene.

The painting is rich in texture and just draws me in when I look at it. At the bottom, the hues gently flow together, which reminds me of lounging at the beach during the sunset.

Once the painting is done I will post a photo of the image.

Agents of Change are raising awareness about issues of poverty and taking action to create positive social change. Their main project right now is "Ride to Break the Cycle", a 3000 km bike ride from Vancouver to Tijuana, Mexico in May 2007.

This event was held to launch the bike ride and raise funds through a silent auction. They are raising a $100,000 microcredit fund to be be distributed as small trust-based loans to entrepreneurs in developing countries.

My painting 'Malate' was donated to Agents of Change for the silent auction!

The newest project I am working on is a group show of Spanish artists in Vancouver. The show is being supported by the Embassy of Spain to Canada, as well as the Ministry of Arts & Culture and Spain.

The purpose of the show is to promote Spanish culture in Vancouver. Seeing that there are quite a few of us Spanish artists here, Carmen from the Spanish Association of BC decided to gather us together.

The Consul of Spain in Vancouver invited me to a dinner reception to celebrate the National Day of Spain. Although it's on October 12th, it was celebrated today to coincide with the visit of Don Mariano Alonso-Burón, Ambassador of Spain to Canada.

I was also invited to display my artwork, along with other Spanish artists. It was an honor to present my work to the ambassador. Here is a photo with him infront of two of my new pieces:

It was a fantastic event. The dinner at Pan Pacific was amazing and Spanish people always know how to have a good time anyway.

People kept coming through the door till late at night. Since the space isn't super huge it got so hot inside. Better that than an empty space...

and a little snapshot of moi... After being sleep deprived for about a month. I was super organized and put a ton of planning into this event, but it was worth it. The studio inauguration is certainly a milestone to me.

Atelier de Tini Meyer

Yay! I am very happy to announce that I now have a studio in Vancouver! My studio space is located on Powell Street by Victoria Drive. The whole deal got finalized last week. The space is about 500 sq. ft. and very artsy. I'll be sharing the space in the LES (Lower Eastside Studio) Gallery with two other artists but we all have different schedules so it works out fine.

Plus, Lisa, the curator of the gallery organizes art shows at the LES Gallery every month, this way I get more exposure. I think it's a great stepping stone and I am very excited.

I'll be inaugurating my studio Tuesday, May 30, 2006. More details to follow shortly, as well as photographs of the space. I'll be moving in this weekend...

Fuego de la Vida - Fire of Life

I'll be posting more photos of the stuff I did in Spain... Here is a photo of FUEGO DE LA VIDA, a piece I was commissioned to do for the founder of www.donquijote.org. I felt quite honored as I did my own rendition of don Quijote and showed how Spain had an impact on me. When I was there, everyday was filled with so much fire for life. Even Mondays were exciting, but weekends were just the best. I was filled with energy and passion in all I did, I was myself more than ever. My heart aches when I look at this piece and remember the underlying stories that helped me create this.

This painting was inspired not only by the story of don Quijote, but also by the company itself. Since the company started, it has brought thousands of people from all over the world to the adventural mosaic of Spain.

The fiery red hues represent the passionate life which exists in Spain. The calming yellow tones reflect how Spaniards enjoy things to the fullest, like having coffee with a friend and forgetting all worries.

As an artist, I was exposed to the beauty of living in a place as mesmerizing as Salamanca. Every day in Spain brings something new, just the same way this painting can.

MILLENNIUM SHOWER

This piece is perhaps my best piece yet. It was done in 2002 and it took me forever to complete. This is just a close-up of the piece, but the entire MILLENNIUM SHOWER is composed of golden/bronze dots. I don't know if I will ever have that much patience again...

I love looking at this piece, I wish my ceiling would be covered in this design, so I could gaze at my own stars at night.

Centenera - The Completion

After spending 3 nights painting at the weirdest times (the first night I started painting at 2am) the project was completed. It felt great to see my work in a very local place, it made me feel so accepted and at home. All Spaniards I met showed me so much warmth and welcomed me. Although the Philippines will forever be my heart and soul, Spain is my other half.

I had an opening show at Centenera (more about that later) and it was amazing so see all these people party in a place where such a big part of the vibe was created by my work.

Partying at Centenera was always tres fabulous. Here is a snapshot of me with Carine, my good friend from Nice. Don't ask why we were doing this infront of a big crowd of people... Just natural craziness that Spain instills!

Centenera: Salamanca, Spain

One of the most exciting things that have ever happened in my life, career wise and on a personal basis, was little stint in Spain. While working on a marketing research project I was able to expand my network of contacts in Spain.

I lived in Salamanca in 2005 and often went to Madrid, one of my favorite cities in the world. Living in Spain was so inspiring and really had a strong impact on me as an artist.

In Salamanca I got commissioned to paint Centenera, a popular bar along Gran Vía. Within 3 nights I had to complete 7 big wall panels. It was a very crazy experience, being under so much time pressure and it was my first big commission in Spain, so I wanted it to be something out of this world. Here is a picture of me, painting "Spain style", that is to say with flowing Sangría coming my way.

Welcome to my online canvas! I will be posting photos of artwork in the process, as well as any other artistic updates. My website www.tinimeyer.com is currently being re-vamped, once it's done I will let all of you know. For now, here is a shot of a commission I did for someone in Holland. They wanted something lively for their living room, so I went with an orange palette since the tones are so striking... not to mention that orange is by far the most popular color in Holland.
